If you're interested in the stories below, or need experts for any other topic you might be working on, don't hesitate to reach out to us at press@sandiego.edu.* Recent American Academy of Pediatrics Study Finds 60% of Families Grew Closer During the Pandemic, Despite Increased Stress A new study from the American Academy of Pediatrics found that “while families reported stress during the pandemic, most stressed families also reported positive experiences”…adding that “positive childhood experiences can protect against toxic stress.” Erika Cameron, associate professor and department chair of Counseling & Marital and Family Therapy is available to provide insight on this research, how stress can impact kids and how stressful situations, like the pandemic, can also help with bonding. Europe Develops Proposal to Regulate Artificial Intelligence: What is the impact for the future of AI in the U.S. and locally? The European Commission recently developed a proposal for a regulation on Artificial Intelligence, calling it “the first ever legal framework on AI.” Martiza Johnson, director of a new center at USD focused on data science, artificial intelligence and society, can provide insight on this proposal, what businesses will need to consider while developing AI and how this raises questions of accountability, responsibility and consent for this type of technology. 92% of USD Students Participated in Internships, Helped Small Businesses in the Pandemic Despite the pandemic, 92% of USD's class of 2020 participated in internships. Students found opportunities to build skills, make connections, and explore career paths — all while helping local small businesses. For example, a local nonprofit is working with three USD interns who have helped with the business’ social media marketing — leading to a larger social media reach for her organization.
