USD News Connect: Connecting Expert Voices to the Stories Impacting Our Community

May 4, 2021

Good morning newsrooms!

Here's your USD News Connect — where each week the University of San Diego media relations team offers expert voices to speak on stories impacting our community. If you're interested in the stories below, or need experts for any other topic you might be working on, don't hesitate to reach out to us at press@sandiego.edu.*

Changing careers during the pandemic

Robin Darmon, senior director of the Career Development Center at USD, and Dan Roccato, finance professor at the USD School of Business, can provide insight into a recent survey that found a quarter of American workers plan on looking for a new job when the threat of the pandemic decreases, signaling a looming “war for talent.” The survey also found one in three workers would not want to work for an employer that required them to be onsite full time.

Is the smuggling boat that capsized a sign of a larger trend at the border?

Ev Meade, professor at the Kroc School of Peace Studies, is available for Spanish and English media to talk about how the capsizing of a smuggling boat off of Point Loma is part of a larger trend. According to Meade, the pandemic has seen a surge in demand for illegal drugs in the U.S., triggering a hardening of border enforcement regimes in urban areas and ultimately leading to increasingly desperate attempts to reach the U.S. by smugglers and organized crime.

National Nurses Day is May 6: How will the pandemic change the future of routine doctor appointments?

Dr. Jonathan Mack, director of Health Care and Nursing Informatics Programs at USD, can provide insight on how telehealth may play a larger role in routine doctor visits after the pandemic, the benefits of telehealth and what patients should consider when deciding between an in-person and telehealth doctor visit.
