May 11, 2021

Good morning newsrooms!

Here's your USD News Connect — where each week the University of San Diego media relations team offers expert voices to speak on stories impacting our community. If you're interested in the stories below, or need experts for any other topic you might be working on, don't hesitate to reach out to us at press@sandiego.edu.*

Sharks use Earth's magnetic field to navigate

A new study confirms for the first time that sharks use the Earth’s magnetic field to navigate the open seas. Andrew Nosal, adjunct assistant professor of environmental and ocean sciences at USD, can provide perspective on this study. He is not affiliated with this study, however it aligns with his research on sharks using smell to navigate.

Pandemic’s Impact on Children’s Mental Health

May is Mental Health Awareness Month and the pandemic has had a big impact on children’s mental health. Erika Cameron, associate professor and department chair of USD’s Counseling & Marital and Family Therapy is available to provide insight on this topic and how the closure of in-person learning has affected kids.

Governor Newsom's California Comeback Plan

Professor of Economics Alan Gin is available to talk about Governor Newsom's plan, a key component of which is the $5 billion for unpaid rent relief and the $2 billion for unpaid utility bills. This is a boon according to Gin, because having to repay the accumulated back rent due would slow the economic recovery and/or lead to evictions that would worsen the homelessness problem.

For all media inquiries, email our team at

press@sandiego.edu.

* Please note that times of availability will vary according to professors' schedules.
