Jonathan Bowman, professor of communication studies with expertise in nonverbal communication, can share how people will have to adjust back to a reliance on facial expressions in public — which can lead to some social awkwardness. Bowman can discuss how important our facial expressions are when communicating and what we learned about nonverbal communication during the pandemic. Memorial Day is the unofficial start to summer — but will consumers actually travel? A recent report prepared for the San Diego Tourism Authority forecasted that San Diego won’t see the same tourist levels as 2019 until 2023. With Memorial Day marking the unofficial start of summer, Andrea Godfrey Flynn, associate professor of marketing, can explain what we can expect our tourism industry to look like this summer, from a consumer behavior perspective, and why COVID-19 will still play a role in travel decisions, including where travelers visit. What's really impacting rising home prices? Lumber shortages? Consumer demand? San Diego home prices increased 19.1% in a year as of March and outpaced nearly every city in the country. Jeremy Gabe, professor of real estate, can speak about the factors that are contributing to the surge and what we can expect to see with home prices in the near future. The Energy Policy Initiatives Center (EPIC) at USD released a report which identifies opportunities to develop carbon offset credit projects in the San Diego region to help local leaders understand the role that carbon offset credits could play in achieving carbon neutrality in the region. Carbon offset generally refers to a greenhouse gas emissions reduction or removal that is used to compensate for emissions that occur in another location.
