This week we take time as a nation to remember the incredible work and legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. As you enjoy your shortened four-day week, we invite you to reflect on Dr. King's work toward justice, and to consider how you can follow his lead in your own life and work.
Here are some resources to get you started:
Spring '22 COVID Updates
- The University has extended remote instruction through February 4. In-person instruction will commence on Monday, February 7.
- All students are required to register for COVID-19 testing on campus via a drive-through test in the Main and West garages to be offered Monday through Friday the week of Jan. 31-Feb. 4. Stay tuned for additional information regarding scheduling your test.
- If you need access to a study space for your Zoom classes, you can reserve a room in the LRC or use the 2nd floor reading room.
- Please remember to monitor the Dean’s COVID-19 updates page, where the Dean’s School of Law specific updates are posted, and send any questions to lawstudentaffairs@sandiego.edu.
- We will hold a Law Student Town Hall on Friday, January 21 at 12:00pm. Please submit your questions in advance. The Zoom link for the Town Hall is here.
If you are experiencing any financial emergency circumstances that place in jeopardy your ability to complete your legal education, please review the information at the bottom of Sidebar or the Law Student in Need Fund website.

Law Student Town Hall, January 21 at 12:00pm
We will hold a Law Student Town Hall on Friday, January 21 at 12:00pm via Zoom. This is a chance for you to raise questions and concerns and to engage in a dialogue with Dean Schapiro and other administrators. Please submit your questions in advance.
Volunteers Needed for the 2022 ABA Law Student Division Regional Client Counseling Competition
The USD Client Advocacy Team will be virtually hosting the ABA Law Student Division Regional Client Counseling Competition on February 11th and 12th. Competitors from 9 different law schools across the country will be competing in this virtual competition, where the competitors are tasked with conducting several 45-minute interviews of prospective clients consulting the competitors for issues involving civil rights. Resultantly, the USD Client Advocacy Team is seeking USD law students (1L - 4L) who are interested and willing to play a client for the competition during one of the three available times below:
(1) Friday, February 11, 2022, from 8am - 11am (2) Friday, February 11, 2022, from 1pm - 4 pm (3) Saturday, February 12, 2022, from 8am - 12pm

This is an experience that can boost your resume and prepare you for legal practice. We have a few spots remaining for the Spring 2022 semester in the following direct client service clinics: Civil, Education and Disability, State Income Tax (CA), and State Sales & Use Tax (CA). Looking for a way to get published? Maybe earn some extra cash? Then consider entering a writing competition. Visit the Writing Competitions web page for current opportunities. There are a variety of topics that you can write an essay on. Current opportunities include the The American Kennel Club (AKC) Companion Animal Law Writing Contest and Marshall M. Schulman Criminal Law Student Writing Competition. Deadlines vary and new competitions are posted periodically, so check them out today!
Spring 2022 Off Campus Federal Work Study Application is Available
Students employed in unpaid, non-profit 501(c)(3) or government agency positions this fall can apply for funding through the Federal Work Study (FWS) program.
Students must submit the 2021-2022 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) on the studentaid.gov website and request FWS on their FAFSAs. They will also need to submit the Off Campus Federal Work Study Application. If you have questions, please contact the Office of Financial Aid at (619)260-4570 or lawaid@sandiego.edu.

Law Student in Need Fund
Through the generosity of donors, the School of Law has established the Law Student in Need Fund to provide direct support for law students who are facing emergency circumstances that place in jeopardy their ability to complete their legal education. Please visit the Law Student in Need Fund website for the funding guidelines and a link to the application.
