University of San Diego

Office of the President

Dear USD Community,

This weekend’s deadly terrorist attack in Israel and its aftermath have left us shocked and heartbroken. While we are not aware of any USD students or faculty studying or working in the area at this time, the impact of the violence is especially acute for those with ties to the area. We hold the victims and their families in our hearts and prayers and condemn terrorism and acts of violence in any form.

As a Catholic university, and in alignment with Pope Francis’ call to end the violence, we are guided by our mission and vision to foster peace and work for justice in order to create a more hopeful world.

As this escalating situation unfolds, let us renew our commitment to an environment of belonging and support on our campus which is rooted in valuing human dignity and the conviction that all people are created in the image of God. We have a responsibility to bridge differences and approach the complexities of our world with compassion and respect.

Community members impacted by the news are encouraged to seek support and resources:

  • The Counseling Center is available to students for confidential individual counseling and assessments through mywellness.sandiego.edu or by phone at (619) 260-4655.
  • Timely Care is confidential and available 24/7 for students and can be accessed by downloading a free app.
  • University Ministry is also here to support mental and emotional challenges by contacting (619) 260-4735 or by visiting Founders Hall 20.
  • The Employee Assistance Program can provide referrals to specific resources depending on individual needs.

Peace,

James T. Harris III, DEd
