Dear USD Community,

As we approach Commencement weekend we are filled with excitement and anticipation for our graduating class of 2026. Congratulations to all our graduates and thank you to our entire community who have supported them along the way. I am grateful every day for the hard work and deep dedication to our mission by everyone at USD. This is truly a special and extraordinary place.

The end of the academic year is a time of both celebration and reflection. As I think about the past year, I am heartened by the impact made by our community — through research, creative collaborations, service learning, athletic accomplishments, a commitment to wellness, expressions of faith and much more. These stories are proof that higher education is more important than ever, essential for our society and a functioning democracy.

Like many of you, just a couple months ago I was enthralled watching live footage of the Artemis II mission as it traveled farther than any human has been. It was a moment where we witnessed the power of human ingenuity and collaboration, proving that incredible things can be accomplished when we focus on a common goal. Quite frequently great accomplishments such as these begin as sparks of inspiration on a college campus. As our Torero graduates prepare for the next stage in their lives, I hope they bring the same sense of wonder, curiosity, compassion and knowledge to their personal and professional pursuits. I remain steadfast and hopeful that our Torero community can be a shining example to the world and champions for human dignity. As Pope Leo recently reminded us during his trip to Africa, “What is urgently needed is the courage of new visions and an educational pact that gives young people space and trust.” I am certain that USD creates that environment for learning, discovery and discernment.

Congratulations again to our graduates — I look forward to celebrating with you this weekend. For the rest of our USD community, I wish you a summer of joyful times with loved ones, rejuvenation and adventure. See you back on our beautiful campus this fall.
