Governor Newsom Signs Bill to Require Housing Plans for Foster Youth Aging Out of Care
|
Governor Newsom recently signed AB-546 which will now require the county welfare department to share whether a foster youth, aging out of the foster care program, has secured housing before leaving the program -- preventing the youth from becoming homeless. A representative from the Children's Advocacy Institute (CAI) at the University of San Diego's School of Law is available to discuss what this bill means for foster youth and the impact it will have on preventing foster youth from becoming homeless in the future.

USD Law Graduate's Firearms Bill for Ghost Guns Signed by the Governor
|
USD School of Law graduate, Marcus Friedman '21, wrote Assembly Bill 1057 which was recently signed into law by the Governor. The bill will increase the scope of the types of firearms, including ghost guns, that can be seized for emergency Gun Violence Restraining Orders. The bill also expands the definition of firearms to include "precursor parts" for Domestic Violence Restraining Orders. Marcus Friedman is available to discuss his work on this bill and what this means for gun safety in California.

October is National Women’s Small Business Month

Rachel Lozano Castro, Director of The Brink Small Business Development Center (SBDC) at the School of Business, recently wrote an Op-Ed celebrating women-led business owners and sharing how the community can support more women in business. Between January to August 2021, 140 businesses were created across The SBDC network – nearly half of those from women. And, since 2018, The Brink has helped companies raise over $130 million in capital. USD Deepens Presence in Tijuana with new HUB, Promoting Cross-Border Collaboration and Partnerships
|
The Tijuana HUB is a new multi-purpose space housed at the Business Innovation and Technology (BIT) Center for University of San Diego students, faculty, staff, alumni and community partners to collaborate directly with Tijuana partners on projects, deepening the university’s history of community engagement in the region.
The purpose of the Tijuana HUB will be to facilitate and improve cross-border collaboration in entrepreneurship business, education, arts, human rights and other areas integral to the advancement of economic development and social justice. This partnership also solidifies USD’s commitment as a Binational Anchor Institute, investing financial and human resources in partnership with our neighboring community south of the border.
