Financial Health in the New Year

Inflation jumped at its fastest pace in nearly 40 years last month, a 7% spike from a year earlier that is increasing household expenses. Dan Roccato, clinical professor of finance, can provide tips for people to take control of their financial health in the new year.

Black Holes. Futuristic Materials. Frozen Atoms. USD's Physics/Biophysics Department is Proving to be a Research Hub to Watch.

The physics/biophysics department at USD is made up of only 7 faculty members, yet their team has received more than $1.7 million in grant funding in the last year alone, earned prestigious National Science Foundation & Clare Boothe Luce grants and the number of undergraduate students working on research (at a graduate level) doubled during the pandemic from 29 to 56. The department is conducting research on a variety of physics topics including: black holes, how human biology can be used to create autonomous materials of the future and the behavior of atoms when they reach temperatures very near absolute zero.

Local Startup Uses The Brink at USD as a Resource, Closes Contract with Taco Bell
|
The CEO and founder of ChargeNet Stations, Tosh Dutt, got involved with The Brink Small Business Development Center (SBDC) for business advising in 2020. In less than 2 years, the company raised $6 million to place EV chargers at Taco Bell. The Brink, housed at USD, works with San Diego-based business clients running or starting growth-oriented, innovation-based companies. Rachel Lozano Castro, director of The Brink, can share how businesses can take advantage of services like the ones the ChargeNet Stations CEO used, new opportunities for small businesses in 2022 and how raising capital is essential for start-ups. Tosh Dutt is also available for interviews to share his experience using The Brink.

USD Professors Featured in Futurum Magazine for the Creation of The STEAM Team Academy
|
Dr. Odesma Dalrymple, Dr. Joi Spencer and Dr. Perla Myers spoke with Futurum Magazine (pg. 44) about their work creating The STEAM Team Academy, a week-long STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) educational experience for middle and high school students – with a goal to make STEAM learning accessible to everyone.
