Grocery Store Shelves Empty Again

You may have noticed during your recent trip to the grocery store that many shelves are cleared out. The highly-contagious omicron variant is forcing grocery store workers to call out sick, making it tougher for grocery stores to keep shelves stocked. The labor shortage is also having an effect on grocery stores, as well as the trucking and shipping industry.  Alan Gin, associate professor of economics, is available to discuss some of these reasons driving current supply shortages at your local stores.

USD Professor Finds Ancient Humans Were Hunters Two Million Years Ago

According to a new study published in Quaternary Science Reviews, ancient humans may have hunted two million years ago — rather than scavenging on the leftover prey of carnivores like big cats. The new evidence comes from Kanjera South, an archeological site near Lake Victoria in Kenya. The study was carried out by Dr. Jennifer Parkinson, assistant professor of anthropology at USD, and her colleagues. She is available to speak about the archeological site and how they used cut marks on animal bones to reach their findings.

The Violence, Inequality and Power Lab Launches at USD to Confront Abuses of Power and Violence Globally

Formerly known as Impact:Peace, The Violence, Inequality, and Power Lab at the Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice (KIPJ), launched this week. The VIP Lab will focus on cultivating cutting-edge ideas that confront power and end cycles of violence.  Rachel Locke, Director of the VIP Lab, can talk about how power inequalities and the drive to retain or obtain power, is a dominant factor in nearly all instances of violence.  Locke can also discuss why research and analysis of rising threats of violence made against locally elected leaders in San Diego County will be among the VIP Lab’s first priorities in 2022.
