Good morning newsrooms!

Decision Delayed on California Public Utilities Commission’s Solar Proposal

The California Public Utilities Commission is proposing to “revise the current net energy metering tariff and sub tariffs” which would impact the way solar customers receive financial credits for excess solar generation, amongst other proposed changes. The Commission says they “found that the tariff negatively impacts non-participating customers and is not cost-effective.” Meanwhile, solar advocates rallied against the proposal recently. Scott Anders, director of the Energy Policy Initiatives Policy (EPIC) at USD, is available to provide a neutral perspective on the Commission’s proposal and what it means for the solar industry.

USD Introduces New Center for Digital Civil Society (CDCS) to Support Digital Literacy

USD is now home to the Center for Digital Civil Society (CDCS) which will bring together the community (academic, industry and the public) to establish a new type of relationship with data that epitomizes legibility, accountability and resilience. Focused on giving people the knowledge and agency they need to thrive in a digital world, the Center's founding director, Dr. Maritza Johnson, can provide insight on news topics which include, but are not limited to: data privacy, cybersecurity, AI and ethics, and people’s relationship with data and the importance of developing technology for good.

The Impact of Digital Devices on the Healthcare Industry & People’s Health During the Pandemic

A study by EY found the pandemic led to a spike in telemedicine with video consults (from 5% to 19%) and telephone consults more than doubling. Research from the European Parliamentary Research Service also found the “coronavirus has accelerated the rise of digital health, a broad concept that includes solutions for telemedicine and teleconsultation, remote monitoring, connected devices, digital health platforms and health apps.” Dr. Jonathan Mack, director of USD's Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP), Nurse Practitioner Program, can discuss which wireless devices are being used to help patients virtually and how digital technologies are keeping people healthy outside of the doctor’s office.
