CA Bill Introduced Today to Crack Down on Social Media Platforms that Addict And Harm Kids
California Assembly Bill 2408 was introduced today by Assembly Members Jordan Cunningham (R-San Luis Obispo) and Buffy Wicks (D-Oakland) to impose a clear duty on social media platforms not to use techniques that addict children and to make platforms liable for penalties and damages when social media addiction harms children. The bi-partisan, first-in-the-nation state legislation will work to discourage, through financial accountability, social media companies from manipulating their inventions to be addictive and harmful to kids, especially adolescent girls. The Children’s Advocacy Institute at the University of San Diego’s School of Law and Common Sense Media are co-sponsors of the bill.

Will High Gas Prices Drive California Closer to its Goal of Zero-Emission Cars by 2035?
With gas prices skyrocketing, could more consumers look to electric vehicles (EV) as a way to avoid future gas price hikes? Governor Newsom issued an executive order in 2020 that would require only the sale of zero-emission passenger cars and trucks by 2035. Could current gas prices also get California closer to this goal? Jae Kim, associate professor in industrial and systems engineering, can provide insight on this topic while sharing the challenges consumers currently face with purchasing an electric vehicle (i.e. high EV prices, supply chain issues). Kim can also discuss the factors that could play a role in whether consumers make a leap to purchasing an EV.

The Importance of University Art Galleries in Providing Free and Accessible Art to Local Communities
There are nearly 250 museums in San Diego County, according to the San Diego Museum of Art. While Balboa Park is a known hub for art museums, local universities also provide a space for art to be enjoyed. The University of San Diego’s University Galleries is home to six galleries across three buildings on campus that are free and open to the public. And, while 78% of Arts and Culture organizations reported operating at a reduced capacity during the pandemic, USD’s University Galleries continued to acquire and share roughly the same amount of artwork, even while online. Derrick Cartwright, director of University Galleries, can share the role of university art galleries in San Diego, the importance of free, accessible art for all communities and how universities are a natural hub for showcasing art. *Possible opportunities to visit University Galleries for visuals of new exhibitions like, “The Gout and the Guillotine” which opened yesterday.
