USD School of Law Launches Center for Employment & Labor Policy (CELP) to Provide a Hub for Employment Law Research, Education & Policy Impact

CELP will be a hub for employment law activity, with a goal of bringing together experts in the field, locally and nationally. The Center’s programs will work to elevate research, policy impact, and teaching in the field while highlighting the employment law expertise of local practitioners; and providing a forum for engagement and debate on employment-related topics. Orly Lobel, Warren Distinguished Professor of Law at USD and the author of the forthcoming book, The Equality Machine: Harnessing Digital Technology for a Brighter, More Inclusive Future, will serve as the Center’s director and is available to discuss the Center. Lobel can also provide expertise on future employment-related law topics.

How Our Fashion Choices Changed With the Pandemic & What it Means

What role does fashion play in our lives when dealing with a stressful time, like a pandemic?  Marilynn Johnson, assistant professor of philosophy and recent author of “Adorning Bodies: Meaning, Evolution, and Beauty in Humans and Animals,” says after difficult times, like the Great Depression and now the COVID-19 pandemic, there is an explosion of fashion choices and designs. Fashion has also evolved, for example, as seen at Wall Street where clothing has become more casual. Johnson says it is a natural instinct to dress to communicate and after more than two years of living in a pandemic, people are looking to express themselves through fashion. Johnson is available to discuss how fashion is evolving due to the pandemic and the larger role fashion plays in how people are expressing themselves today.

The Joan B. Kroc School of Peace Studies Responds to Increasing Need of Global Humanitarian Workforce

The toll of humanitarian disasters has grown in the age of climate change, environmental degradation, and mass migration. These trends will likely continue, requiring the global humanitarian workforce to expand at an annual rate of 6-7%. The Joan B. Kroc School of Peace Studies is launching a fully-online Master of Science in Humanitarian Action (MS-HA) in the fall to help with this humanitarian need. The new MS-HA program will offer experiential learning, in some cases through virtual reality, by looking at current case studies to learn effective ways of preventing and managing humanitarian crises.
