USD School of Nursing Professors Provide Medical Support to Ukrainian Refugees at the Border, Next via Telehealth
Julia Appis, adjunct professor, and Charisse Lyn Tabotabo, clinical associate professor at the Hahn School of Nursing and Health Science at USD, responded to the call to help Ukrainian refugees at a medical hub set up at the U.S.-Mexico border. Both professors have a unique connection to Ukraine -- Appis is Russian-American with family in Ukraine and Tabotabo's boyfriend is Ukrainian. When the war broke out in Ukraine, they both knew they wanted to use their nursing skills to help Ukrainians at the border who were waiting to come to the U.S. They volunteered for a few weeks (once a week) in 12-hour shifts. As the medical hub shuts down at the U.S.-Mexico border, the professors will now transition into telehealth visits with Ukrainian refugees to help with their medical needs. Appis will plan to help 1-2 times a week for televisits and Tabotabo will help with logistics.

Theatre Master Students Graduate, Reflect on Unique Experience -- Starting the Program During the Pandemic
Graduate students in the Master of Fine Arts in Acting program will graduate this month after spending their first year mostly remote during the pandemic and their second year in a more traditional acting environment. During the pandemic, students learned how to act for the camera while studying remotely, even putting together a theatrical production completely via Zoom. As they prepare to graduate, that experience is proving to be instrumental as students navigate the large role that virtual auditions are playing due to the pandemic. Jesse Perez, Program Director, Craig Noel Distinguished Professor of The Old Globe and University of San Diego Shiley Graduate Theatre Program can share ways the department transitioned during the pandemic and how this played a role in how Perez is thinking about the future of the theatre program to adapt to new casting changes in the industry. Students are also available to reflect on their experiences.

Celebrating the Graduating Class of 2022: Adrielli Ferrer, School of Law
The University of San Diego will hold in-person commencement ceremonies over two weekends beginning this Saturday, May 21. Adrielli Ferrer is a first-generation student graduating from the School of Law this weekend. Ferrer’s father is Dominican and her mother is Mexican. Ferrer’s uncle inspired her to pursue a bachelor’s degree. After graduating, and before attending law school, she took a two-year break to support her family. During that time, she helped her family buy a car and made sure her sister applied to college and that she didn’t have to pay for tuition. Ferrer hopes to inspire more women of color to pursue a career in law. She’s already inspired her young niece who wants to be a lawyer one day.
