New Drought Restrictions In Effect: What Impact Will These Restrictions Have on California’s Drought Outlook?

2022 had the driest January, February, and March in more than 100 years, according to the State. As the drought continues into the upcoming summer months, the State Water Board initiated new emergency water conservation regulations and Governor Newsom called for water suppliers to move to a Level 2 Water Shortage. Dr. Zhi-Yong Yin, Environmental and Ocean Sciences Professor, can provide insight into the outlook of California’s drought ahead of summer and how big of an impact new water-saving measures will have on our community water supplies.

USD Expands Torero Promise Program to Cristo Rey San Diego High School, Providing a Pathway to College for Students
|
Qualified students at Cristo Rey San Diego High School will now be able to take advantage of a special admission track opportunity to attend the University of San Diego, with 100 percent of their family’s demonstrated financial need met, through USD’s Torero Promise program. Launched in 2017, the Torero Promise program provides a pathway to college for graduating seniors at one of the 10 participating high schools who have a 3.7 GPA or higher, have taken at least three honors-level courses and have no disciplinary or academic violations. If a student fulfills these qualifications, they receive automatic admission to USD.

Fowler Global Social Innovation Challenge
|
The University of San Diego’s Joan B. Kroc School of Peace Studies is hosting the Fowler Global Social Innovation Challenge Finals on Saturday, June 18, 2022. The Fowler GSIC is an opportunity for student social entrepreneurs to build an international network while competing for vital seed funding. The top 8 teams from universities around the world will deliver a 90-second pitch of their innovative sustainable business solutions to global issues for a chance to earn a portion of more than $75,000 in seed funding. All student ventures will address at least one of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
Two teams from USD are competing in the event. Tabitha Nakholi founded the Wezesha Binti Foundation, which works to support equal access to sustainable menstrual health products. Steffek Rainey created Envi Bottle, an insulated water bottle with a detachable compartment to store foldable stainless-steel utensils, a reusable straw and a nylon bag.
