The CDC has 7 variants listed for the Omicron variant (B.1.1.529, BA.1, BA.1.1, BA.2, BA.3, BA.4 and BA.5) with Omicron spreading “more easily than other variants”, according to the CDC. Dr. Razel Milo, associate professor of nursing, teaches nursing students about epidemiology, amongst other topics. Milo can discuss why we’re seeing so many variants from Omicron, how some variants may be more contagious than others and the best ways to protect yourself from getting sick.

Later School Start Times for Middle and High Schools

Some South Bay school districts are already back in class and other local districts are gearing up for the fall semester. Under a new state law, high schools can't start before 8:30 a.m. and middle schools can't start before 8 a.m. Reyes Quezada, professor and chair of the department of learning and teaching at USD, can speak to why the law went into effect, the pros and cons of the later school start times, and also any plans in the works to help parents with childcare options due to the shift in schedule.

Solar Advocates Rally Against CPUC Proposal on New Rooftop Solar Rules

Last week and this week, solar advocates have been rallying against a California Public Utilities Commission proposal to “revise the current net energy metering tariff and sub tariffs” which would impact the way solar customers receive financial credits for excess solar generation, amongst other proposed changes. Scott Anders, director of the Energy Policy Initiatives Policy (EPIC) at USD, is available to provide a neutral perspective on the Commission’s proposal and what it could mean for customers and the solar industry.

USD Cybersecurity Graduate Engineering Program Receives National Award
|
The University of San Diego recently joined a select group of schools in California when the Shiley-Marcos School of Engineering’s CyberSecurity Engineering graduate program was designated as a National Center for Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense by the National Security Agency’s National Cryptologic School and federal partners. “This is a designation that anyone who has a cybersecurity program desires,” says Shiley-Marcos School of Engineering Dean Chell Roberts. “It means you have arrived. That the program has been vetted not only by us and the community, but by security agencies of the United States federal government.”
