USD News Connect: Connecting Expert Voices to the Stories Impacting Our Community

August 16, 2022

Good morning newsrooms!

Here's your USD News Connect — where each week the University of San Diego media relations team offers expert voices to speak on stories impacting our community. If you're interested in the stories below, or need experts for any other topic you might be working on, don't hesitate to reach out to us at press@sandiego.edu.*

California Inflation Relief Checks

Millions of Californians will be receiving inflation relief checks in the coming months. Despite helping Californians pay for the high cost of consumer goods, some question the impact of putting more cash into the economy at a time when inflation is at a 40-year high. Alan Gin, associate professor of economics, is available to speak on this topic and provide insight into why he believes adding this extra money into the economy won’t contribute to a rise in inflation.

The Impact of the Inflation Reduction Act on Electric Vehicles

The recent passing of the Inflation Reduction Act "creates a new credit for commercial clean vehicles and modifies the refundable tax credit for the purchase of plug-in electric vehicles and previously-owned electric vehicles," according to the bill. Jae Kim, associate professor in industrial and systems engineering, can share how electric vehicle companies will see changes (i.e. Tesla will now be eligible for federal incentives while newer EV companies won't).

29 Local High School Students Traveled to Baja California to Get Hands-On Science Experience

USD Environmental and Ocean Sciences professor, Drew Talley, has been connecting Hoover High School students at the Ocean Discovery Institute with hands-on science research since 2004. The Ocean Discovery Institute works toward breaking generational poverty cycles in the City Heights community by transforming young lives through science. 77% of the students from the Ocean Discovery Institute have earned science and related degrees. Recently, 29 students returned from Bahía de Los Ángeles in Baja California after working alongside scientists & professors to learn new science topics such as, observing/tracking the local bird population, researching sea turtles and fish, and even swimming with whale sharks.  Professors, a representative from the Ocean Discovery Institute and participating high school students are available for interviews. *Spanish Interview Opportunities. *Photos/videos can be shared.
