The Economic Impact of Labor Day

With Labor Day just around the corner, will travelers get in their last-minute summer travel plans despite high inflation and gas prices? And, if so, what kind of impact will that have on our local economy? Based on a San Diego Tourism Authority report, San Diego saw nearly 10 million more visitors in 2021 compared to 2020. Could we continue to see a rise in tourism this year and how will Labor Day play a part in that? Alan Gin, associate professor of economics, is available to put this into perspective.

The CDC says "flu vaccinations should ideally be offered during September or October." While the CDC says "timing, intensity, and severity of the 2022-23 influenza season cannot be predicted," some are looking at Australia's flu season as a prediction of what we might expect in the fall/winter here in the U.S. Dr. Jonathan Mack, associate professor and doctor of nursing practice program director, can provide insight on this topic and share tips for people to stay healthy ahead of flu season, while we're still navigating COVID-19.

TikTok Creates Plan to Maintain Election Integrity Ahead of Midterm Elections

TikTok recently rolled out steps they are taking to maintain election integrity and address misinformation, ahead of the U.S. midterm elections. The social media platform created an "Election Center" to serve as a hub for credible midterm election information and will also continue to not allow for paid political ads. Nikki Usher, associate professor of communication, is available to discuss how this move further showcases the power and responsibility of social media companies in our democratic lives, how this mirrors existing prohibitions that are seen in other countries, some of the challenges that social media platforms create ahead of elections, and how moves like this can be a step forward.

First Day of Fall Semester Tomorrow
|
The University of San Diego is preparing to welcome approximately 9,000 students back to campus for the 2022-2023 academic year. More than 1,550 new first-year and new transfer students will call USD home. The first day of classes for undergraduate and graduate students is Wednesday, August 31.
