USD's Housing Rights Project is Providing Free Legal Help to Section 8 Tenants who saw Rent Increases after AB 1482
|
According to the California Apartment Association, AB 1482 became effective January 2020 and "imposes rent caps on some residential rental properties in California." For one of our most vulnerable populations, tenants with Section 8 vouchers, some landlords are hiking up rents beyond those limits and the Housing Commission is improperly approving the rent increases above the 10% limit. Alysson Snow, leader of the Housing Rights Project at USD's School of Law, can discuss how she has seen some of her clients see more than a 34% increase in rent and how this bill is impacting families living in Section 8 housing. The Housing Rights Project launched less than a year ago and is focused on providing education, outreach and free direct client representation to serve the legal needs of low-income and undocumented tenants facing housing instability and homelessness. USD law students also help represent the clients and their cases.
