New Report Shows the Vital Role Nonprofits Play in San Diegans’ Lives and the Need for Increased Support

The Nonprofit Institute at USD released its 2022 State of Nonprofits and Philanthropy Report, which tracks the health and vitality of our region’s nonprofit sector and philanthropy that supports it. This year’s report found the issues that San Diegans care about most are those where nonprofit organizations play a vital role (i.e., housing, climate change, wildfires, jobs that provide a livable wage and mental health). Yet, when it comes to the health of our nonprofit sector itself, San Diegans rank it last in their list of priorities. Emily Young, Executive Director of The Nonprofit Institute, is available to speak about the report, how nonprofits are most immediately threatened by the impacts of inflation, and recommendations to help support nonprofits.

New Head Coach for the Women’s Tennis Team Strives to Make Tennis More Inclusive While Supporting Other Latina Tennis Players

Nadia Abdala was promoted to head coach of the women’s tennis program in June 2022 after eight seasons as an assistant coach, where she helped the team get to the NCAA Tournament three times. Abdala co-founded an organization called Latina Tennis Coach during the pandemic to provide a support system for other Latina tennis coaches around the world. Through a WhatsApp group chat, Abdala has connected dozens of Latinas together to chat about tennis, cheer each other on and help with advice. Abdala was born and raised in Mexico City. She is a part of the U.S. Tennis Association’s Diversity & Inclusivity Program to help expose minorities to tennis and make the sport more inclusive.

New Research Looks at Social-Emotional Learning within the Monarch School

The Jacobs Institute for Innovation in Education at USD partnered with the Monarch School to conduct a study to show social-emotional learning trends among students over three years. The Monarch School educates nearly 300 students impacted by homelessness. The study shows that through the Monarch School’s teaching methods, students overall had acceptable levels of social-emotional skills that remained consistent across time. Lisa Smith, Associate Director of Research at the Jacobs Institute for Innovation in Education, is available to speak about the study, why social-emotional learning is important, and how the findings indicate the Monarch School provides an environment in which students feel engaged, safe, and like they belong.
