Distinguished Lecture Series with Lech Wałęsa

The Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice is hosting a Distinguished Lecture Series with special guest Lech Wałęsa, Nobel Peace Prize laureate and former President of Poland. Wałęsa will discuss current world events, his view of the United States’ role on the global stage, the history of the Solidarity Movement, and his vision for a prosperous future. The event will be held Wednesday, November 16, 2022 at 6:00 p.m. at the Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice at the University of San Diego. Wałęsa will not be available for media interviews during the event, however he will have limited media availability from 10:15 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. on November 16. Please RSVP to press@sandiego.edu if you would like to attend the media interview availability or the Distinguished Lecture Series.

November 15 is National Philanthropy Day

The Nonprofit Institute at USD recently released its 2022 State of Nonprofits and Philanthropy Report, which tracks the health and vitality of our region’s nonprofit sector and philanthropy that supports it. The study found the public maintains high levels of trust in nonprofits, more so than government and the for-profit sector to deliver high quality services and act on the public's behalf. However, the report illustrates a disconnect between issues San Diegans find important and the types of nonprofits where they direct their donations. Although San Diegans express high levels of concern about issues such as housing, climate change, and creating jobs that pay a livable wage, the top cause they reported giving to was animal welfare. Emily Young, executive director of The Nonprofit Institute, and members of the research team are available to speak about the local philanthropy trends as well as the top causes people donated to in 2022.

What the Future Holds for Social Media Platforms

Facebook's parent company Meta recently laid off 11,000 employees after a big bet on the "metaverse." Twitter has laid off nearly half of its workforce since Elon Musk took over the company, as he and his team make sweeping changes to the platform. Two of the biggest names in social media are undergoing major shifts. What does that mean for all of us, the people who use these apps, going forward? Justine Rapp Farrell, associate professor of marketing and chair of the marketing department, can talk about the recent turmoil, and what it could be signaling about the future of these platforms, and social media use in general.
