USD News Connect: Connecting Expert Voices to the Stories Impacting Our Community

November 29, 2022

Good morning newsrooms!

Here's your USD News Connect — where each week the University of San Diego media relations team offers expert voices to speak on stories impacting our community. If you're interested in the stories below, or need experts for any other topic you might be working on, don't hesitate to reach out to us at press@sandiego.edu.*

Monarch Migration

Every year monarch butterflies migrate to Southern California between mid-October and February to escape the harsh winter weather. However this year, the International Union for the Conservation of Nature placed them on its Red List of Threatened Species, meaning they are endangered. Geoffrey Morse, associate professor of biology, can speak about monarch migration, why they are now considered endangered, and whether we should expect to see them during the migration period.

Fowler Business Concept Challenge Grand Finale

Organized by the Knauss School of Business' Entrepreneurship and Innovation Catalyzer, the Fowler Business Concept Challenge focuses on catalyzing the entrepreneurial spirit of our USD students. On December 2 at 4:00 p.m., 16 semi-finalist teams will take the stage to pitch a new business concept to a live audience of local investors, industry leaders, students and alumni. Both finalists and semi-finalists have the chance to win up to $45,000 in scholarships. Please RSVP to press@sandiego.edu if you would like to attend.

USD Professor Writes Book about Using Tech for Good

Orly Lobel, professor and founder of the Center for Employment and Labor Policy (CELP) at the University of San Diego School of Law, recently published a book, "The Equality Machine: Harnessing Digital Technology for a Brighter, More Inclusive Future." The book looks at how technology such as AI, robotics and digital platforms, can be used for good -- especially when it comes to detecting discrimination or subverting stereotypes. Lobel also published a piece in TIME, using themes from her book, that argues that too much data privacy "can undermine the ways we can use information for progressive change" and instead of looking at data collection as harmful, she recommends that "we should focus on regulating misuse rather than banning [data] collection."
