USD News Connect: Connecting Expert Voices to the Stories Impacting Our Community

December 13, 2022

Good morning newsrooms!

Here's your USD News Connect — where each week the University of San Diego media relations team offers expert voices to speak on stories impacting our community. If you're interested in the stories below, or need experts for any other topic you might be working on, don't hesitate to reach out to us at press@sandiego.edu.*

NOTE: Due to USD's holiday break, the next News Connect will be sent January 10, 2023.

Future of Short-Term Rentals in Mission Beach

Applicants vying for nearly 1,100 vacation rental licenses in Mission Beach will learn the outcome of their lottery no later than December 16. So what does this mean for applicants who do not receive a license? Jeremy Gabe, assistant professor of real estate, can speak about the economics of San Diego vacation rentals and what people may do with their assets if they aren't granted a license.

Examining Major Financial Institutions’ Historical Ties to Slavery

Some members of Congress are pushing for a bill that would require some of the country’s biggest financial institutions to examine their historical role in slavery, and lay out what they’re doing to address their past. Sarah Federman, associate professor of conflict resolution, was part of a panel of experts that testified before Congress, and can talk about these institutions’ histories, and what this bill would expect of them.

New Year, New Opportunities

The recent jobs report showed hiring is still going strong, despite other economic uncertainties. With employers still looking to fill positions, the upcoming New Year could be a good time for workers to dust off their resumes and explore a career change. Matt Yepez, the senior director of USD’s Career Development Center, can talk about some of the things people may not know when they send in a job application, and how they can get a leg up on the competition.
