USD News Connect: Connecting Expert Voices to the Stories Impacting Our Community

January 17, 2023

Good morning newsrooms!

Here's your USD News Connect — where each week the University of San Diego media relations team offers expert voices to speak on stories impacting our community. If you're interested in the stories below, or need experts for any other topic you might be working on, don't hesitate to reach out to us at press@sandiego.edu.*

Climate Impact of Gas Appliances and Push to Phase Them Out

A federal agency made headlines last week, when an official suggested they could consider banning gas stoves. While those comments came in response to a report focused on their potential health risk, researchers have long pointed to the need to reduce natural gas use to reach greenhouse gas emissions targets. The idea of phasing out natural gas appliances isn’t a new one. In 2021, for example, the City of Encinitas banned use of certain natural gas appliances and equipment in new construction projects. Scott Anders, director of the Energy Policy Initiatives Policy (EPIC) at USD, can talk about the impact gas appliances can have on the environment, and the momentum behind electrifying them.

San Diego Economic Roundtable

The 39th annual Economic Roundtable will be held January 18 at the University of San Diego and will discuss the relationship between the national economy and our local economy. Expert panels will talk about the trends both are experiencing as well as how our public investments can stimulate growth in our local economy. Alison Sanchez, assistant professor of economics and business analytics, is available to speak about the free event as well as some of the economic trends we are seeing both locally and nationally.

More than 15 Car Makers and their Vehicles Vulnerable to Hacks

According to a recent article in Security Week, a group of security researchers discovered numerous vulnerabilities in vehicles from 16 car makers, including bugs that allowed them to control car functions. Using only the VIN (vehicle identification number), which is typically visible on the windshield, the researchers were able to start/stop the engine, remotely lock/unlock the vehicle, flash headlights, honk vehicles, and retrieve the precise location of the cars. Nikolas Behar, cybersecurity professor at USD, can speak about the vulnerabilities and what car owners need to know.
