What is the State of Guaranteed Basic Income In California After Gov. Newsom's Launch of Pilot Programs?

At the end of 2022, Governor Gavin Newsom announced the launch of the Guaranteed Income Pooled Fund which would support "select state-funded guaranteed income pilot programs" and ultimately give a select group of Californians money for 12-18 months. A recent report by Cal Matters looked at some of the guaranteed income programs in California, including at the San Diego County Child Welfare Services and Jewish Family Service of San Diego. Matt Zwoliniski, professor of philosophy and author of Universal Basic Income: What Everyone Needs to Know, can discuss the concept, what research has shown about the effectiveness of guaranteed income programs and if these pilot programs could create more pathways for future programs. Matt also talked on our team’s podcast about universal basic income here.

All kinds of businesses — tech, restaurants, even carmakers — are exploring the subscription business model. Justine Rapp Farrell, chair of USD’s marketing department, can talk about why businesses see this model as a money-maker, what the pros and cons are for consumers, and what the limits may be for subscription-based services.
