10th Annual Mariachi Conference Kicks Off at the University of San Diego

The University of San Diego presents a two-day event where students are immersed in music and culture. Participants will learn mariachi history, instrument technique, and musical style. They'll get the opportunity to interact with professional and influential musicians, culminating with a concert that's open to the public. The event will take place from March 9-10 at USD’s Shiley Theatre. Mariachi ensemble director, Serafdin Paredes and students are available to speak about this San Diego staple and how the impact of mariachi music has had an impact in our region.

USD's Children's Advocacy Institute Represents Former Foster Youth in Complaint Against County for Taking Their Social Security Survivor Benefits

The Children's Advocacy Institute at USD filed a complaint against the County of San Diego, Health and Human Services Agency, Child Welfare Services on behalf of two young siblings who are former foster youth. The complaint alleges that the County took Social Security survivor benefits to which the children are entitled and used these funds to pay for their care while they were in the foster system. The siblings are now adopted and their mom is advocating for them and hoping that this lawsuit can change this unlawful practice that negatively impacts foster youth. In addition to bringing this lawsuit in San Diego, CAI is leading a national effort to change this practice in state and local jurisdictions across the country from Alaska to New York City.

School of Leadership and Education Sciences Launches “Community Conversations” Tackling the Most Important Issues in K-12 Education

Dr. Kimberly White-Smith, recently appointed dean and professor of the School of Leadership and Education Sciences (SOLES), will be holding a number of “Community Conversations” in San Diego to share her vision for the school and to talk about new projects, such as the newly launched Black InGenius Initiative (BiGi). The program explores thoughtful and innovative teaching techniques, and provides a path to college for marginalized students. The event will take place on Thursday, March 9th from 5:30-7:00p.m. at Cafe X: By Any Beans Necessary. The small business is owned by double USD alumna Khea Pollard.
