Women’s History Month: Celebrating Women Student Leaders in USD’s Engineering Program

A recent report featured on the Society of Women Engineers website found that women represented only about 34% of STEM workers in 2019. USD’s Shiley-Marcos School of Engineering – which is celebrating its 10 year anniversary this year – is working to change those statistics. 40% of full-time tenure-track faculty members are women and 7 out of 9 current presidents of the engineering school’s student organizations are women. On Thursday, March 16 from 12 - 2 p.m. USD's Society of Women Engineers are hosting a career fair to help fellow female students network and find new internship/job opportunities from a dozen local businesses attending the event. The businesses are also sponsoring students to attend national conferences through their participation in the career fair. Students and an engineering professor are available for interviews during the career fair. RSVP to press@sandiego.edu if you’re interested in attending.

Silicon Valley Bank’s Collapse + What’s Next

With the recent news of Silicon Valley Bank failing, the former bank announced on Monday that the FDIC transferred all deposits to a bridge bank to give people access to their money. Dan Roccato, clinical professor of finance, can talk about what happened with this bank failure and what it means for people who have money in other banks. Corinne Hoare, lecturer in marketing and former communications expert at the White House during the 2008 financial crisis, can discuss what small and medium-size banks can learn from Silicon Valley Bank's crisis communication response in order to prevent more bank failures and a potentially broader financial crisis including the power of the spread of panic and fear that ultimately led to the collapse of the country's 16th largest bank, the role that influencers play in spreading panic through communication channel and the White House's response and the timing of the presidential election cycle.

Negotiating for Everyday Change and Equitable Futures

Any negotiation – from asking for a raise or navigating a new landlord – can be a nerve-racking experience. Power dynamics and social factors complicate negotiations even further, particularly for people from historically marginalized and working-class communities. Associate professor of conflict resolution Sarah Federman recently gave a talk to Harvard Law School about how negotiation strategies and outcomes differ depending on your age, ethnicity, gender, economic class and more. Increasingly, organizations of all kinds are seeking to build more diverse teams, but few know how to make these teams thrive. She can talk about the issues, and what both employees and employers can do to remove barriers and build thriving organizations.

At the Edge of it All

USD Media Relations Podcast Episode: "At the Edge of it All" - Forensic Economics: Tracking the Impact of Black Markets

Topher McDougal, associate professor of economic development, talked to “At the Edge of it All” about his work researching illicit trade markets — like illegal gun sales. Without things like quarterly earnings reports to draw from, how do we figure out the economic scope of these underground industries and quantify their impact on society?
