Could the Signing of Utah's Recent Social Media Bill Set a Precedent for Other States & How Kids Use Social Media?
|
Utah recently passed a bill that will put more restrictions on social media companies. With the bill, social media platforms won't be allowed to use designs that knowingly cause kids to get addicted to their platforms. Parents will also be allowed to sue social media companies if their kids become addicted to social media. Ed Howard, Senior Policy Advocate for the Children's Advocacy Institute at USD, spearheaded the lobbying of AB 2408, a first-in-the-nation California bill from 2022 that died without a vote, after receiving broad, bipartisan support. AB 2408 is nearly identical to the enacted Utah social media addiction bill. Howard can discuss the impact of the passing of this bill in Utah and how this could set a precedent for other states to pass something similar.
