USD Class Integrates Geology & Philosophy with Recent Field Trip to Death Valley
|
20 USD students recently went to Death Valley to put the lessons they are learning in a class called "The Desert Sublime" into the desert space they have been studying all semester. The course blends two disciplines together -- geology and philosophy -- and is co-taught by Professor of Environmental and Ocean Sciences Bethany O'Shea and Professor of Philosophy Brian Clack. In the classroom, students have been reading a book by philosopher Edmund Burke about the concept of beauty and the sublime while also learning about the geology of the desert. The four-day field trip allowed students to see the connection between two seemingly different topics, philosophy and geology, and experience the desert sublime, firsthand, in a personal, meditative way. This course is an example of a series of Advanced Integration courses taught at USD that combine two different disciplines. *Professors, students and b-roll/photos available.

The FTC Issues Warning That Scammers are Using AI to Sound Like Your Loved Ones in Need of Money

The FTC says that scammers only need a short audio clip of a loved one’s voice from their online content to sound just like them over the phone. Nikolas Behar, adjunct professor of cybersecurity, can talk about how this technology works and how to avoid getting scammed.

San Diego Poised to Adopt Stricter Tenant Protection Rules
|
The City of San Diego is one step closer to adopting a sweeping new ordinance that would overhaul renter protections. The City Council this month will vote on final approval. Among other things, the ordinance would offer stronger protections – and more compensation – for no-fault evictions. The USD School of Law’s Housing Rights Project helps tenants with legal issues, and has seen an uptick in these kinds of evictions. Seth H. Barron, staff attorney with the Housing Rights Project, and Alysson Snow, leader of the Housing Rights Project at USD's School of Law, can talk about how this ordinance would address issues those tenants have been facing, and more broadly about how the rules will impact both renters and landlords. Spanish interviews available.
