First Cohort in the ‘Californians for All College Corps’ Program Spent the Year Volunteering in Exchange for $10K for Their Education
|
Throughout the school year, nearly 100 USD students volunteered at community partners throughout San Diego County as a part of the Californians for All College Corps Fellows program which provides undeserved college students with up to $10,000 for completing a year of community service.
Simon McGuire, an Environmental and Ocean Science major, spent the last year working at the Port of San Diego where his work focused on researching nature-based solutions. One of his projects was to create an invasive and native plant guide for the Sweetwater Bike and Pedestrian Path along the Chula Vista Bayfront to help maintenance staff learn which plants may be invasive to the area. Thanks to this opportunity, Simon will get to use the Port of San Diego as his senior research project where he will analyze eelgrass bed health and look at heavy metal contamination, including nutrient concentrations in the water. He’ll collect water and sediment samples and take those back to USD to study his findings. Simon and Eileen Maher from the Port of San Diego are available for interviews & there are b-roll opportunities at the Sweetwater Bike and Pedestrian Path or Port of San Diego.

City of San Diego to Hold Second Reading of Tenant Protection Ordinance Today
|
The City of San Diego is one step closer to adopting a sweeping new ordinance that would overhaul renter protections. The second reading of the Tenant Protection Ordinance is scheduled for today. Among other things, the ordinance would offer stronger protections – and more compensation – for no-fault evictions. The USD School of Law’s Housing Rights Project helps tenants with legal issues, and has seen an uptick in these kinds of evictions. Seth H. Barron, staff attorney with the Housing Rights Project, and Alysson Snow, leader of the Housing Rights Project at USD's School of Law, can talk about how this ordinance would address issues those tenants have been facing, and more broadly about how the rules will impact both renters and landlords. Spanish interviews available.
