Five USD Students Graduate After Following Educational Pathway Program From Middle School to College
In sixth grade, students at Nativity Prep commit to going to college. With that commitment, Nativity Prep supports the students, both financially and educationally, until their college graduation. Nativity Prep is a Catholic middle school and college preparatory program in San Diego that works to support first-generation, low-income students. Thanks to USD’s Torero Promise program, which partners with Catholic high school in the Diocese of San Diego, the students were guaranteed admission to USD. They are also leaving with little to no debt. Students and program organizers are available for interviews.

What Could a City of Berkeley Case Mean for Gas-Powered Appliances in California?
Recently, judges in the Ninth Circuit issued an opinion on the California Restaurant Association v. City of Berkeley which found that the Energy Policy and Conservation Act (EPCA) preempts a recent City of Berkeley ordinance that was looking to end natural gas plumbing in new buildings. Now, the City of Berkeley has a chance to file for a rehearing on the case. A representative from USD’s Energy Policy Initiatives Center can discuss how this case could determine how other California cities adopt all-electric ordinances like we saw in Encinitas and what it could mean for a city’s sustainability goals when looking to decarbonize buildings through cleaner energy.

Student Graduating This Sunday -
Juan Cedillo
Juan Cedillo is currently a Sergeant in the U.S Army Reserve, who’s graduating with a BS/BA in electrical engineering. Cedillo grew up in San Diego, and struggled in school before deciding to join the military at 17. There, he says, he learned a lot of things, including that he may want to become an engineer. After returning home, he gave school another go and excelled in math and science, before transferring to USD – the only school he applied to. Cedillo feels a strong sense of pride in his accomplishments, which he says honor the sacrifices his parents made when they made a dangerous, and lonely, crossing into the United States. He’ll become the first of his family to graduate with a college degree, and will start a job with Boeing next month. Cedillo is available for interviews in English and Spanish.
