Free Program Gives Local Businesses Access to USD Experts
There’s still time to apply to a USD program that leverages the expertise of our faculty to help local businesses. The Move Forward program provides businesses with a free alternative to costly consultants, partnering them instead with Knauss School of Business faculty members, who will provide insight and help address specific challenges. They can work on things like reducing costs, making processes more efficient, collecting data, and more. In the past, the program worked with the San Diego Chamber of Commerce to compile an analysis of the cross-border economy. Move Forward is free and any San Diego or Tijuana-based business is eligible. Lauren Lukens, executive director of the Ahlers Center, is available to provide more information on the program. The deadline to apply is May 31.

U.S. Surgeon General Issues Advisory about Social Media’s Impact on Young People
Recently, the U.S. Surgeon General issued a 25-page advisory focused on the “growing concerns about the effects of social media on youth mental health.” The advisory presented a body of research demonstrating the negative impacts of social media use by teens, including depression, anxiety, self-harm, and eating disorders. The advisory included actions that families, tech companies, and policymakers can take to protect children. The California Legislature is currently considering SB 287, which would hold social media companies accountable for targeting youth with harmful content. Other state legislatures, such as Utah, as well as the U.S. Congress have joined this child protection effort. The team at the Children’s Advocacy Institute at USD is available to discuss this advisory, the impacts of social media on kids and discuss what bills are in motion to push for more oversight on how social media companies are negatively impacting kids and teens.
