June 6, 2023

Good morning newsrooms!

Here's your USD News Connect — where each week the University of San Diego media relations team offers expert voices to speak on stories impacting our community. If you're interested in the stories below, or need experts for any other topic you might be working on, don't hesitate to reach out to us at press@sandiego.edu.*

Can June Gloom Affect Your Mood?

It has been a long, gloomy season in Southern California, known for its sunshine. Can these prolonged weather conditions affect your mood? Professor of Practice and Clinical Director of USD’s Tele-mental Health Training Clinic, Dr. Carrie Tremble, can share how these weather patterns could lead to seasonal affective disorder also known as seasonal depression, and what can be done to help mitigate its effects on mental health.

From the Graduation Stage to the Job Hunt - What's Next for Graduating College Students in Today's Job Market?

Thousands of students around the country are celebrating their newly-minted degrees but that celebration will quickly segue into looking for their first real job. A recent report from Handshake, a career-connecting app for students, found that more than 70% of 2023 graduates "say they have the skills they need to get the job they want." And, for Gen Z graduates, working for a company that is socially responsible is high on their job search. Matt Yepez, Senior Director of the USD Career Development Center, can discuss what college graduates are looking for in the job market, tips for finding a career post-graduation and how to stand out in the crowd amongst other recent graduates.

Economic Impact of Climate Change

Climate change is not just shaping our weather, but businesses and our economy as well. In the past week we’ve seen two major developments in our region of the country alone  – State Farm halting home insurance offerings in California due to “growing catastrophe exposure” and Arizona is now curbing home construction in Phoenix due to a limited water supply. Alan Gin, associate professor of economics, can talk about these developments, and how the shifting climate could influence business decisions and shape the economy going forward.
