The San Diego Regional Climate Collaborative at USD & its Partners Develop the First of its Kind Roadmap to Protect San Diego County Coastlines from Climate Change

In an effort to contextualize and emphasize the impacts of climate change on coastal health, the San Diego Regional Climate Collaborative, which is housed at the Nonprofit Institute at the University of San Diego, partnered with Resilient Cities Catalyst and CivicWell to launch the San Diego Region Coastal Resilience Roadmap (Roadmap) – the first roadmap of its kind in California that will provide community leaders with an easy-to-follow guide to enhance resilience along the coast, and in their own communities. The Roadmap will serve as a guide of what cities are doing, and plan to do, to combat climate change in their communities while also sharing an “Actions Database” with more than 80 actions needed to move the needle in protecting our coastline. Darbi Berry, Director of Climate & Environmental Programs at The Nonprofit Institute, is available to discuss the Roadmap and how other cities can follow these climate action steps to support the region's pathway to coastal resilience.

U.S. Army Warns About Unsolicited Smartwatches with Malware Targeting Service Members

The U.S. Army's Criminal Investigation Division (CID) is warning service members to be aware of unsolicited smartwatches that have been sent in the mail. The smartwatches may contain malware that could grant the sender access to saved data, including banking information, contacts, and account information such as usernames and passwords. Nikolas Behar, adjunct professor of cybersecurity, can talk about this warning and how scammers are using smartwatches to target service members.

Middle and High School Students Selected to Participate in Cost-Free STEAM Academy at the University of San Diego

The STEAM Team Summer Academy, hosted by the University of San Diego, begins this week and runs through the 14th of July. It will include a Family STEAM Day for Academy participants on Saturday, July 8th, and a STEAM Youth and Community Conference on August 4th that will be open to the wider San Diego community. The academy is a two-week-long quality educational experience for about 70 middle and high school students to engage in hands-on learning in science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM). The program is made possible thanks to grant support from The San Diego Foundation in partnership with the San Diego Unified School District. USD also supports the program through strategic initiative funding and in-kind support of many faculty, staff, students, and community members. The STEAM Team Academy faculty and students will be available to speak throughout the duration of the academy.
