USD Report Documents Threats and Harassment of San Diego’s Elected Officials

New data from USD’s Violence, Inequality and Power (VIP) Lab shows the scope and impact of threats and harassment of elected officials in San Diego. In partnership with the Institute for Civil Civic Engagement (ICCE), the VIP Lab surveyed hundreds of officials and analyzed nearly half a million tweets. The results show harassment is a bipartisan issue, but that it also has an outsized impact on women officials. Rachel Locke and Carl Luna, directors of the VIP Lab and ICCE, respectively, can discuss the research and its implications, and what needs to be done to address the issue.

USD Students & Professors Use Local Brewery’s Beer Wastewater to Develop Formula for a Sustainable Biofuel

University of San Diego students and professors Odesma Dalrymple, Marissa Forbes and Drew Talley are spending the summer developing a formula for creating a sustainable biofuel using a mix of beer wastewater from Stone Brewing, kelp and fish or sheep waste. The team is collaborating with researchers from the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill in Barbados who developed a successful formula for biofuel as a gasoline replacement, using rum wastewater, sargassum (seaweed) and sheep manure. USD researchers are seeing if a similar formula can be created in San Diego using local waste products. Stone Brewing has supplied 14 liters of their reclaimed beer waste water to the research project. Just last year, they reclaimed more than 11 million gallons of wastewater using an on-site water reclamation system. USD researchers and a representative from Stone Brewing are available for interviews and b-roll opportunities are possible at the USD lab and at Stone Brewing.

What Researchers Can Learn From the Tragic Submersible Implosion When Developing Materials for Vehicles in the Future - Local Researcher Shares Insight

As an investigation continues into what caused the recent submersible implosion, what could this incident mean for the engineering of future transportation vessels? Paulina Diaz-Montiel, assistant professor of mechanical engineering, studies what causes composite materials used to build vehicles like airplanes, space rockets – also used in the recent submersible – to fail. Diaz-Montiel can discuss how some industries like the aerospace and automobile industries are looking into the use of composite materials to provide a high-performance, low-weight alternative and why the process may not be so simple. *Spanish interviews available.
