Conflict Resolution Expert on Hollywood Strikes

It’s the middle of Hollywood’s blockbuster summer season, but with writers and actors on strike a cloud is hanging over the industry's future. Productions have ground to a halt, along with contract talks — with both sides digging their heels in. Sarah Federman, associate professor of conflict resolution, can talk about what it’s going to take to get both sides back to the table and, once they’re there, make the shifts necessary to find an agreement. Federman is releasing a book next month titled Transformative Negotiation. She can talk about how successful negotiations address the immediate issues while shifting how the parties understand and interact with each other going forward. Otherwise the conflict will rear its head again.

Tips to Prepare Students to Have a Successful School Year

Students in the South Bay headed back to school last week and in the next few weeks, students from other local districts will join them. As students transition back into the classroom, what are some steps that families can take to set their students up for success? Reyes Quezada, professor of the Department of Learning and Teaching, can discuss the "7 C’s" that he recommends for students to get into a rhythm and stay on track during the school year. Some of those tips include time management, setting aside "imaginative time" each day and also co-creating meals as a family, while bringing in math/science into the cooking process.

Mid-Year Financial Check-In

We’re just over halfway through the year, and now’s a good time to re-examine your finances — how well you’re saving for retirement, how you’re setting yourself up for taxes next year, and more. Dan Roccato, clinical professor of finance, can give some tips on what people should be looking at this time of year, and how they can adjust if needed.
