Did the Surgeon General's Advisory about Social Media's Impact on Kids Make a Difference? A USD Professor Surveyed People to Find Out
|
In May, the U.S. Surgeon General issued an advisory on the potential negative impact of social media on youth mental health. Susannah Stern, professor of communication, wanted to figure out if this warning, issued by a person of authority, impacted how people felt about social media effects and what they believed could improve the current situation. She surveyed nearly 200 people across the country and found that virtually all participants already believe social media negatively impacts youth mental health — but about 25% said the Surgeon General's advisory impacted their beliefs or actions. Stern can discuss her new research and her ideas for how health experts, journalists, storytellers and others can communicate meaningfully to the public about social media and youth mental health.
