Rising Water Temperatures

July was Earth’s hottest month on record. And while many in densely-populated areas experienced the worst of it, the heat wasn’t confined to land. Surface water temperatures in Florida reached 100 degrees, a glacial lake outburst sent water flooding into Juneau, Alaska, and strong winds from a hurricane off Maui’s coast provided the fuel for deadly wildfires. Michel Boudrias, associate professor of environmental and ocean sciences, can talk about what’s causing temperatures to rise — particularly in our oceans — and what kind of impact that may be having on our climate and weather-related events.

New Cybersecurity Research Revealed at DEF CON – One of the World’s Most Prominent Hacker Conventions

Annual hacker convention, DEF CON, was just held last week in Las Vegas. It serves as a forum for the newest innovations in software, computer architecture, hardware modification, and anything else that can be “hacked.” Nikolas Behar, adjunct professor of cybersecurity, attended the event and can talk about the latest cutting edge research that was revealed at the conference. He can also provide insight into what it is like being an "ethical hacker," as well as provide cybersecurity tips to help keep people's information safe.

Critical Analysis of 'Oppenheimer'
|
Thomas Reifer, professor of sociology, says the film 'Oppenheimer' raises many important issues, including the vast increase in destructive power that came with the making of atomic and then thermonuclear weapons. Reifer's research has focused on nuclear war planning, as well as what humanity might do to avert this threat today. He is available to speak about the issues raised in the film, as well as how many reviews of the film have tried to discount the uncertain risks Reifer says were taken when the hydrogen bomb project was approved.
