USD News Connect: Connecting Expert Voices to the Stories Impacting Our Community

September 5, 2023

Good morning newsrooms!

Here's your USD News Connect — where each week the University of San Diego media relations team offers expert voices to speak on stories impacting our community. If you're interested in the stories below, or need experts for any other topic you might be working on, don't hesitate to reach out to us at press@sandiego.edu.*

Climate’s Impact on Food Prices

Over the last several years, many of us have seen our grocery bills go up. But the pandemic and its after effects aren’t the only thing driving food inflation. Changing climates and major weather events are increasingly impacting the agriculture business all around the world. India, for example, is cutting back on rice exports to rein in prices at home, after rain and flooding battered the country’s crops. El Niño could impact coffee bean crops. Alan Gin, associate professor of economics, can talk about how these weather events are impacting the global food supply chain, and what the future may hold.

Course Shines Light on Growing ‘Business for Good’ Movement in San Diego

The way we do business is changing, and so is the way we teach it. Social consciousness is more than just an ideal, and more and more companies are making tangible changes to lift up their communities and improve the lives of their workers. Paula Cordeiro, Dammeyer Distinguished Professor of Global Leadership and Education, is organizing a seminar that will teach working executives these ideas and how to implement the changes at their companies. She can discuss these concepts and why they’re not just idealistic, but also good business.

9/11 Remembrance Ceremony

The University of San Diego will observe the 22nd anniversary of the 9/11 attacks Monday morning at an event that will both reflect on the past and look forward to a more peaceful future. USD will honor those who died on September 11, 2001, and shine a light on current day efforts to foster peace. In that spirit, the event will be held at USD’s Joan B. Kroc School of Peace Studies, one of the only stand-alone peace schools in the country. Speakers include USD President James T. Harris III, DEd and San Diego City Council Member Raul Campillo. USD Vice President for Mission Integration, Michael Lovette-Colyer, PhD, will be available for an interview. *Please RSVP to press@sandiego.edu if you would like to attend.
