USD News Connect: Connecting Expert Voices to the Stories Impacting Our Community

September 19, 2023

Good morning newsrooms!

Here's your USD News Connect — where each week the University of San Diego media relations team offers expert voices to speak on stories impacting our community. If you're interested in the stories below, or need experts for any other topic you might be working on, don't hesitate to reach out to us at press@sandiego.edu.*

September is Suicide Prevention Month

The CDC observes Suicide Prevention Month every September. Suicide affects people of all ages. In 2021, suicide was among the top 9 leading causes of death for people ages 10-64. Suicide was the second leading cause of death for people ages 10-14 and 20-34. Carrie Tremble is the clinical director of the USD Tele-mental Health Training Clinic, which is open to children, adolescents, and young adults from ages 10 to 26. She is available to speak about the warning signs to look out for, how people can help those who may be struggling, and resources available.

Hispanic Heritage Month: Minecraft Hispanic World

The Jacobs Institute for Innovation in Education at USD’s School of Leadership and Education Sciences is focused on advancing innovation and equity in K-20 education by engaging in pioneering research and evaluation and developing innovative curriculum and technologies. Dr. Perla Myers, Executive Director of the Institute, is available to speak about a recently-awarded $1.18 million NSF grant project to develop an immersive, culturally-relevant learning experience in Minecraft: Education Edition to help strengthen Hispanic elementary students' spatial computational thinking skills and awareness of STEM careers. Computer Science major, Melissa Vargas is also available to speak about her involvement in the project.

International Day of Peace

Thursday is the International Day of Peace. Every year on this day, the United Nations calls for worldwide ceasefires and encourages people to reflect on the tangible steps we can take -- together -- to achieve peace. The UN's theme this year is its focus on Sustainable Development Goals. Andrew Biros, Ed.D, is the associate director of social innovation and entrepreneurship at the Joan B. Kroc School of Peace Studies. He can explain what these sustainability goals are, how they can help foster peace, and what USD is doing in San Diego and beyond to achieve these goals.
