October is National Women's Small Business Month

The U.S. Small Business Administration says there are more than 13 million women-owned businesses in the U.S. With millions of women growing businesses, The Brink Small Business Development Center (SBDC) at the Knauss School of Business at USD has seen an increase in women-owned business clients looking for help with their business. Amy Duncan, director of the Brink SBDC at USD, can share how The Brink SBDC is supporting women entrepreneurs, the needs of women-owned businesses, and how women-led companies are creating an economic impact on local economies.

National Women’s Small Business Month: Tips for Women Entrepreneurs to Avoid "Tightroping" to Fit in at Work

Tara Ceranic Salinas, professor of business ethics, has been doing research to help women, by focusing on the impact of a term she calls "tightroping”. "Tightroping" is used to describe how women feel the need to balance themselves on a tightrope to fit in at the workplace. Ceranic Salinas can share how the narratives women are told can hold them back at work, how the idea of work-life balance needs shifting and ways companies can develop a more welcoming, inclusive corporate culture.

Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month: USD Mariachi Director Teaches San Diego Students Mariachi Music for Free through his Non-Profit

Serafin Paredes, mariachi ensemble director at the University of San Diego, teaches mariachi music to students at USD, San Diego Unified School District and also through his non-profit organization, Mariachi Juvenil de San Diego. He founded Mariachi Juvenil de San Diego in 2001 with three goals: to provide students with a place to connect with their culture through music, grow their musical skills and continue their education after high school by granting scholarships to students. Students learn mariachi music for free through the non-profit and have performed at festivals throughout the United States, Mexico, Japan and Finland. Paredes also hosts an Annual Mariachi Conference at USD in March, bringing in students from around the country and Mexico to play mariachi music and learn from some of the best mariachi musicians.
