New Research: 2023 State of Nonprofits and Philanthropy Report

The Nonprofit Institute at the University of San Diego has released its 2023 State of Nonprofits and Philanthropy Report, which tracks the health and vitality of our region’s nonprofit sector and philanthropy that supports it. Some highlights in this report include: 38% of San Diegans are somewhat seriously considering moving out of San Diego – primarily due to the high cost of living, 83% of residents reported having benefited from services provided by nonprofits in the past 12 months, and 81% percent of San Diegans reported nonprofits as being the most trusted to act on their behalf and promote positive social change, compared to businesses (69%) and local government (52%). Tessa Tinkler, director of research at The Nonprofit Institute, is available to speak about the importance of this year’s report and its findings.

October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month: Cybersecurity Expert Shares Tips to Avoid a Cyber Attack

October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month and it's an important reminder to protect yourself and your business from a cyber threat. Cybersecurity professor Niko Behar can provide tips for both businesses and individuals to keep their electronic devices safe from potential cyber attacks. Some of his recommendations include: creating a strong, unique password, securing your home network, updating devices and backing up your data.

Regulators Shining Light on Hidden Fees

It's a practice many have encountered for years: going to buy a concert ticket or some other service, only to find the price jump during checkout, due to added fees. California Governor Gavin Newsom recently signed SB 478, which outlaws so-called "junk fees" - added costs that aren't taxes or fees mandated by the government. Now the FTC is proposing a similar rule. Dan Roccato, clinical professor of finance, can talk about what this means for consumers and whether the move in California could force wider changes sooner rather than later.
