This week, USD joins people around the world commemorating Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead. Multiple altars are on display across USD’s campus this week, including one designed by Antonieta Mercado, associate professor of communication, and her students. The project is a collaboration between Latin American Studies and Communications students, and the student group, the Association of Chicanx Activists (AChA). The altar features handcrafted artwork, and pays homage to Latin American environmental journalists and activists as well as migrants who died crossing the border. Mercado and her students are available to discuss the display and the origins and traditions of Día de los Muertos.

USD Hispanic Engineer Club Sends Half Their Members to National Conference with All Expenses Paid, on a Mission to Diversify the STEM Field
The Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) is the largest association in the nation for Hispanics in STEM. At USD, the chapter is 50 members strong and this week, 27 of them are headed to the SHPE national conference in Salt Lake City (Nov 1-5) to network, learn and secure internships, with all expenses paid through donations. As a chapter, the students have connected through their shared value of "familia" and are working to break barriers as Hispanics in the STEM industry. In the past, attending this conference has led to new internship opportunities that they may have otherwise never been able to find. Rhonda Harley, chapter advisor to SHPE, and students in the club are available to talk about the importance of networking opportunities like these and why the SHPE chapter has found a way to use connections to excel as student engineers.
