What Does President Biden’s Executive Order on Artificial Intelligence Mean for the Future of AI?
|
President Biden recently issued an Executive Order that establishes “new standards for AI safety and security, protects Americans’ privacy and advances equity and civil rights,” amongst other goals. The Executive Order will require AI developers to share their safety test results, establish a cybersecurity program to develop AI tools and work to advance the use of responsible AI in healthcare - along with a long list of other initiatives. Darby Vickers, assistant professor of philosophy and AI ethics researcher, can discuss what this Executive Order means for the future of AI and how these regulations can create a more ethical, safe use of these technologies.

Fowler Business Concept Challenge Grand Finale

On Thursday, 16 semi-finalist teams from across campus will take the stage to pitch a new business concept to a live audience of local investors, industry leaders, students and alumni for the chance to win scholarships. One team competing is called Tonic on Tap, an alcohol-alternative tap room concept that offers zero-proof craft mocktails, non-alcoholic beer and wines. Amit Kakkad, Clinical Professor of Operations and Supply Chain Management, Business Analytics and Entrepreneurship, and the students on the Tonic on Tap team are available for interviews.

November is Native American Heritage Month
|
The University of San Diego’s Office of the Tribal Liaison is hosting several events throughout November to honor Native American Heritage Month. For example, a group of students and faculty have been participating in a book club focused on Native-authored books. On November 13, the group will hold their last discussion on the book, “Warrior Girl Unearthed,” while sharing their thoughts on the book and themes found in the piece. Sahmie Wytewa, Tribal Liaison at the University of San Diego, is available to discuss how she is unpacking conversations surrounding Native American communities by celebrating indigenous identities and developing connections with partners both on and off campus.

A Conversation With the Women PeaceMakers
|
Wednesday night from 6-7 p.m. USD's Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice is hosting a panel with fellows from the Women PeaceMakers program. Three women peacebuilders from around the world are on USD’s campus, examining ways to promote peace and justice from the diaspora. They will be available for interviews before the panel.
