Navigating the News During Election Season
|
Following the Iowa caucuses yesterday, the election year is now in full swing. As campaigns ramp up, we'll be bombarded with political ads on TV, memes on social media and news articles online -- all from politicians and groups vying for our attention. Along with the usual deluge, experts this year are concerned about how things like AI and deepfakes could be used to amplify misinformation. Nikki Usher is an associate professor of communication at USD, and researches how news and social media platforms -- like TikTok or X -- can shape politics. They can talk about some of the concerns about misinformation heading into election season, and how people can sift through that to get the facts and find reliable news sources.

The San Diego Economic Roundtable to be Held at USD on January 19
|
During the San Diego Economic Roundtable this Friday, experts will talk about their predictions for our national, state and local economies for 2024. This year’s event will feature San Francisco Federal Reserve Bank president and chief executive officer, Mary Daly, as well as key regional experts who will discuss national and regional economic policies and impacts. This event has been held at USD for the past 40 years. Tim Keane, dean of the Knauss School of Business, can talk about the role the Knauss School of Business plays in researching economic trends regionally and nationally, providing free programs to local businesses to help them expand, and educating students to adapt to a shifting economic landscape. *Dean Keane will be available for interviews Friday from 11:30am-12:30pm.

January is Mental Wellness Awareness Month
|
January is a time to bring awareness to mental health disorders and encourage anyone to seek help. In fact, a Forbes Health/OnePoll survey found 45% of respondents noted an improvement in mental health as one of their top New Year’s resolutions. Also starting this year, Medicare now reimburses mental health counselors and marriage and family therapists for mental health care of seniors. Carrie Tremble is the clinical director of USD Tele-mental Health Training Clinic. She is available to speak about how people can take charge of their mental health in 2024 and provide tips for people to cope with stress.
