USD News Connect: Connecting Expert Voices to the Stories Impacting Our Community

March 26, 2024

Good morning newsrooms!

Here's your USD News Connect — where each week the University of San Diego media relations team offers expert voices to speak on stories impacting our community. If you're interested in the stories below, or need experts for any other topic you might be working on, don't hesitate to reach out to us at press@sandiego.edu.*

Proposition Aimed at Addressing Homelessness Passes

The passage of Proposition 1 is official. The measure narrowly got the green light from voters, with 50.2% in favor of it. Prop 1 will require counties in California to allocate a certain percentage of taxpayer money to housing and mental health services, in hopes of addressing the state's homelessness crisis. Odilka Santiago is an assistant professor of sociology and co-director of USD’s Urgent Challenges Collective on Homelessness. She can talk about homelessness in San Diego, and how Prop 1 could impact services and the situation in our region.

Study on Intermittent Fasting and Heart Health May Not Paint Entire Picture

New research from the American Heart Association (AHA) links a growing dietary fad -- intermittent fasting -- with a higher chance of death from heart disease. Researchers said while the diet may have short-term benefits, it may also cause long-term damage. Pedro Colio is a professor at USD's Hahn School of Nursing and Health Science, and is an expert in cardiology. He can discuss the findings of the AHA study and explain why the connection may not be quite as simple as suggested. He can also talk about how changing our diet or other habits could have unexpected impacts on our health. Colio is available for interviews in English and Spanish.

Biology Professor Inspires with Touching Story on How She Finds Symbiosis Between Her Personal and Professional Life

Cawa Tran, assistant professor of biology, studies symbiosis, specifically the connection between corals, sea anemones and microorganisms, and the algae and bacteria that live inside of them. But, symbiosis can also be seen as a metaphor for her life. As a first-generation American, high school and college graduate and the first in her family to get a PhD, Tran is on a mission to make a difference with her research on coral reefs and, more importantly, create a welcoming environment for her students to grow, learn and see the impact they can have on the world with their research work.
