USD News Connect: Connecting Expert Voices to the Stories Impacting Our Community

July 23, 2024

Good morning newsrooms!

Here's your USD News Connect — where each week the University of San Diego media relations team offers expert voices to speak on stories impacting our community. If you're interested in the stories below, or need experts for any other topic you might be working on, don't hesitate to reach out to us at press@sandiego.edu.*

Scammers Targeting CrowdStrike Customers

It's been a few days since the CrowdStrike global tech outage and now scammers are starting to target those who were potentially affected. Researchers are now issuing warnings about attackers registering domain names and setting up websites for "CrowdStrike Support" scams to target CrowdStrike's customers. Nikolas Behar, professor of cyber security, is available to talk about what people and businesses need to watch out for to prevent getting scammed and how to protect their sensitive information.

Economic Impact of Comic-Con

This week, San Diego will play host to one of the biggest events on the calendar – Comic-Con. Last year, the event was scaled back due to the Hollywood writers and actors strike, but this year the event will be making a big comeback. So, what could that mean for San Diego? Alan Gin, associate professor of economics, is available to talk about how the convention could impact the local economy.

Middle and High School Students Participate in Cost-Free STEAM Academy at USD

The STEAM Team Summer Academy, hosted by the University of San Diego, wraps up this week. It is a two-week quality educational experience for local middle and high school students, who otherwise wouldn't have the opportunity, to engage in hands-on learning in science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics (STEAM). This program is free for students, thanks to grant support from The San Diego Foundation Level Up program, in partnership with San Diego Unified School District. The University of San Diego also supports the program through strategic initiative funding. The STEAM Team Academy faculty and students will be available to speak throughout the duration of the academy.
