How Olympians Handle Pressure

This week, many athletes embark upon a lifelong dream -- competing in the Olympics. As these athletes take the stage, billions of viewers are expected to tune in to see them compete. That's a lot of pressure. Nadav Goldschmied is a professor of psychological sciences who specializes in sports psychology. He can talk about the kind of psychological pressure Olympic athletes are confronting, and what their coaches or sports psychologists might be telling them to help them overcome it all.

CA Needs More Than One Million EV Charging Stations by 2030

California is reportedly lagging behind its goals for construction of electric vehicle charging stations. The state says it needs to build one million chargers by 2030 and two million by 2035; as of December, there are about 105,000 across the state. Jae Kim, associate professor and chair of industrial and systems engineering, can discuss the challenges the state may face when trying to reach this goal.

Applications Open for Second Round of San Diego County’s Equity Impact Grants

Applications are now open for the second round of grant funding through the County’s Equity Impact Grant program (deadline August 23). The County's Office of Equity and Racial Justice is partnering with The Nonprofit Institute (NPI) at USD for the program. For this round, ten San Diego-based social impact organizations will receive a grant of $100,000 in general operating funds, as well as workshops and coaching from NPI. Dr. Novien Yarber, senior research associate with NPI, can talk about the importance of this program, as well as the workshops, coaching and resources NPI will provide to the organizations.

STEAM Academy Community Conference

 

This summer, dozens of local middle and high school students have been on USD’s campus taking part in a unique learning experience: The STEAM Team Summer Academy. The program uses the arts and playful activities to engage children with scientific and mathematic concepts. At a public event this Saturday, students will present projects and experts will also put on fun workshops on things like biology, robotics and art. All of it is open to the public, and the media is welcome attend. The event will take place at USD on August 3 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Please RSVP with press@sandiego.edu if you’d live to cover it.
