How Community Outreach is Helping Reduce Violent Crime

A recent report from the Major Cities Chiefs Association showed that in the first half of 2024, homicides in San Diego dropped 50% compared to 2023. That mirrors a similar trend in major cities across the country. Andrew Blum, executive director of USD's Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice. He works with the city and community groups doing just that here in San Diego. He can talk about ways these organizations intervene in volatile, potentially violent situations, and how the work they do -- things like mentoring, job training and more -- are creating safer, more peaceful communities.

Does Truthful Campaign Messaging Affect Voting?

Political campaign ads are starting to hit voters’ mailboxes. Andrea Flynn, professor of marketing, has research that explores how voters’ beliefs about the truthfulness of political ads impact ballot measure elections. She looked at statewide ballot measures such as California’s Prop 22 regarding ride-share drivers and California’s Prop 6 regarding repealing the gas tax. Flynn is available to discuss her research and explain how marketing and advertising in political campaigns influences voters' opinions on ballot measures.

New Study Reveals Progress on Gender Equality in the Workplace Has Stalled
|
Although companies have made strides in reducing the gender gap in hiring, promotions, and pay, a recent study shows progress has stagnated or reversed. As a result, achieving workplace parity for women, once considered attainable, could now take decades. Tara Ceranic Salinas, professor of business ethics, is available to talk about the impact of these findings as well as how bias impacts hiring and promotions.

USD Hosts Immersive Multisensory Event
|
This week, USD will host a pair of events celebrating inclusive design, and the talents of San Diego’s visually-impaired community. Wednesday through Friday, the public is welcome to view a free exhibit featuring multisensory artwork made by blind and low-vision artists. The week culminates Saturday evening with a “dining in the dark” sensory experience that will feature food, music, and guest panels. It all supports USD’s collaborations with members of the local blind and low vision community to come up with innovative designs that help visually impaired people independently navigate the world around them.
