Record-Breaking Pledge to USD Will Transform University’s STEM Programs
|
The University of San Diego (USD) received a record-breaking pledge from Darlene Marcos Shiley, philanthropist and Chair Emerita of USD’s Board of Trustees, totaling $75 million. It’s the largest gift in university history and among the largest ever given to any Catholic university in the country. The gift will touch several different areas of USD’s campus, with a primary emphasis on creating what will be known as the ‘Shiley STEM Initiative’, expanding innovative STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) programs, and funding new, state-of-the-art STEM facilities on USD’s campus. What Rights Do States Have Against Federal Policies?

Recently, Governor Newsom has been working to safeguard California's policies before President-Elect Donald Trump moves into the White House. But, what rights do states like California have when it comes to blocking policies at the federal level? Robert Schapiro, dean of USD's School of Law, is an expert in federalism with a focus on state and federal constitutional law. Schapiro can discuss what power states have and legal ways that states have and can push back on federal laws that are in place - if they don't align with a state's constitution.

USD’s Tele-Mental Health Training Clinic Receives Grant to Provide Free Mental Health Services to Military-Connected Community
|
USD’s Tele-Mental Health Training Clinic has received a $2.5 million grant to provide free tele-mental health services to military personnel, veterans and their families. This initiative aims to address the growing mental health needs within the military-connected community. The California Veterans Health Initiative Mental Health Support Grant, awarded by the California Department of Veterans Affairs, will allow the clinic to expand its reach and provide free mental health support to more than 100 military-connected community members throughout California starting in early 2025. Nick Boyd, PhD, assistant professor and principal investigator for the grant, is available for interviews.

University of San Diego to Open Center to Support Success of Neurodivergent Students
|
The School of Leadership and Education Sciences at USD recently announced the establishment of the Center for Embodied Equity and Neurodiversity thanks to a generous gift from the San Diego Foundation. Through interdisciplinary collaboration and innovative programming and workshops, the center aims to address the unique needs and strengths of neurodivergent individuals while promoting awareness and understanding across the broader community.
